The Appalachian dulcimer is a fretted string instrument of the zither family, typically with three or four strings, originally played in the Appalachian region of the United States. The body extends the length of the fingerboard, and its fretting is generally diatonic. From my research bluegrass playing on the dulcimer involves some significant technique suppressing the drone effects.
Susan (Sutherland) Richards, who we all fondly remember for her many years of running Kindermusik in Thunder Bay has kindly offered to donate this beautiful hand made Dulcimer as a door prize.
Larry Kamo and Gilbert Mathieu local dulcimer players are going to be working on bringing it back to top condition as it's been in the case for a few years.
And ... I took a one night deep dive into Bluegrass on the Mountain Dulcimer and found out it really is a legitimate thing so much so that there are festivals dedicated to Bluegrass on the instrument. Based on that finding I have asked Larry and Gilbert to see if they could perform a demonstration of bluegrass on dulcimer at the festival. Mark it on your program it's going to be an interesting challenge!
